B. Joy Keller-Brown ’74 Addressed the Class of 2015
June 23, 2015
The Susquehannock High School Alumni Association Steering Committee named B. Joy Keller-Brown as its “Distinguished Alumni” for 2015. Joy addressed the graduating class at commencement services and shared her wisdom.
“Southern School District gave you the wind beneath your wings; this is the Southern Way,” she said while reminding the Class of 2015 that no matter where they go in life or what they do, it is important to “find your way back home.”
Joy was a standout SHS student and is well recognized in the York community for her professionalism, leadership, and character.
While at SHS, Joy was a yearbook editor, cheerleader, field hockey and volleyball player. Joy was also a member of the SHS legendary 1974 state volleyball championship team.
Joy’s career accomplishments can be seen in the reputation she, along with business partner and husband Jeff Brown, built for a business that’s been in existence since 1899. When Joy started with the agency in 1979, she became the fourth generation to enter the family business, working alongside her father and 74 year-old grandfather.
Since then, she and Jeff have steadily grown the agency from one which operated out of a converted garage with three staff to 18. Today, the agency operates out of a building Jeff and Joy renovated in 1990; a three-story brick building known as the Odd Fellows Hall. Formerly the eyesore of the town, the Odd Fellows Hall stands as a beacon of trust in the community.
Her commitment also extends to the community. Since 1997, Joy has passionately served as a board member with Penn-Mar Human Services, an organization that exists to encourage special needs individuals to reach their full potential and to live their dreams. She has enthusiastically and repeatedly raised funds for several events that the organization holds.
In addition, Joy is actively involved with Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, having served as a council member for two terms, from 1990- 1996 and from 2004 – 2010. Joy also lends her financial strength and time as Treasurer to the York County Agriculture Business Council. Last year, she was asked to serve as a member of the Comprehensive Planning Task Force for Southern York County School District. Recently, Joy joined as a board member for WellSpan Special Services and said she is hoping to make an impact with an organization that is so important to our community.
Joy Keller-Brown was selected as one of Central Penn Business Journal’s Women of Influence for 2013. Joy’s commitment to the community, combined with her technical expertise, make her an inspiring role model for Susquehannock High School students.
Congratulations, Joy on your many contributions to school, community, and country, and for making us all “Warrior Proud!”
