Two players, along with  Milwaukee head coach, were ejected from last Sundays’ game on April 20 for a bench clearing brawl between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Milwaukee Brewers.

Pirate pitcher Garret Cole,  Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez, and, Brewers head coach Ron Roenicke, were ejected from the game.

Freshman Jacob Ness is disappointed with the players’ actions.

“It’s a shame that the players can’t just play the game and enjoy it whether they lose or not,” said Ness. “Instead they have to be cocky and run their  mouth and get ejected from the game.”

With two outs and a scoreless ball game, the fight was sparked by Gomez who hit a triple to deep centerfield over the center fielder’s head and off the wall. Gomez thought for sure it was a homerun off the bat, so he flipped his bat and started jogging to first. After the realization that it wasn’t, he quickly rounded the bases and slid into third safe.

Sophomore Matt Wentz understands Gomez’s actions and shows sympathy.

“He probably read it off the bat wrong and felt like a hero for giving his team the league,” said Wentz. “The wind could have been blowing in, or many other factors that could have affected the ball.”

Opposing pitcher Cole approached Gomez and quickly let his feelings be known.

According to New York Daily News, Cole had a heated argument with Gomez.

“If you are going to hit the ball out of the park, you can look at it,” said Cole to Gomez. “But if you are going to just hit a fly ball to center field, then don’t look at it and run the bases.”

The two were separated by the umpires and then by other players after both benches were cleared. Cole walked away, but Gomez kept running his mouth. Things shortly got physical as left fielder of the Pirates, Travis Snider, came in and threw punches at Gomez.

Math teacher Chris Newland doesn’t agree with Snider’s decision and believes he is in the wrong.

“It was not necessary for the other teammates to get involved when clearly they were not even involved,” said Newland. “It does not pay to be a big shot and run your mouth and get involved in other people’s business.”

The Brewers catcher Maldonado also jumped into the fight to help out his teammate.

Maldonado received a five game suspension, Gomez received three games of suspension, and Cole received two games of suspension.
