Feverish for the fierce Harlem Shake

“Do the Harlem Shake” has been a common expression across the nation as different versions of the original “Harlem Shake” video surfaced on Youtube.

The nation has become obsessed with the song by the artist, Baauer. Originally named Harry Rodrigues, Baauer is a music producer/DJ from Brooklyn. His music genre styles include electronic, trap, and bass that all consist of various styles of urban dance music. Trap and bass are a mix of R&B and dubstep.
The steps of the “Harlem Shake” are: attaining a helmet, putting it on a single person, then that single person starts to dance. There will be many people in the video at this time but they will be sitting casually ignoring the dancing individual. When the song says “Do the Harlem Shake”, the other people sitting there get up and dance in a way that looks erratic.
Freshman Ryan Gloeckner has experience with doing the “Harlem Shake.”
“It’s cool and funny when done right,” said Gloeckner. “I’ve done it, but it wasn’t as good as the ones on Youtube.”
Baauer’s popular single “Harlem Shake” was released nearly a year ago, but just recently started to get recognition from Youtubers. The dance was made into a video and has been replicated by famous sports teams, colleges, and business franchises.
Chemistry teacher Greg Brobst shares his experience with the “Harlem Shake.”
“I was there when the swim team did it, and I’ve seen some hilarious versions too,” said Brobst. “It is so silly and crazy.”
The internet phenomenon or meme was established by “The Sunny Coast Skate” that consists of five teenagers from Queensland, Australia. Once this video achieved millions of views, others could not resist but to join in on the Harlem-frenzy. The video is a global-takeover, and the “Harlem Shake” is currently the #1 song on iTunes.
Junior Sadie Leslie has also done the “Harlem Shake.”
“It’s weird, but funny,” said Leslie, “We did it at counties [for swimming].”
The “Harlem Shake” may be just another internet-craze, but the odd popularity of it will most likely be recognized as one of the most ridiculous fads of 2013 that many students at Susky are enjoying.
