Gearing up for the Battle of the Buildings

It happened last year and it will happen next year, but this Thursday’s Battle of the Buildings will bring an experience no one will forget.
Math teacher and competitor for the benefit of Susquehannock’s Battle of the Buildings team J. C. Lewis explains this Battle’s extra attractions.
“This year… we’re incentivizing a little bit more, if that’s even a word, for students to come,” said Lewis.
The new incentive he is speaking of is a pizza party, which will be occurring in the cafeteria at 5:45 shortly before the actual competition at 7:30.
Students will binge on pizza and dance to the “Harlem Shake” on camera in this massive social event. Then, when the time comes for the Battle of the Buildings, they’ll slide on over to the main gym and become spectators to the antics of teachers and administrators from every building in the Southern York County School District.
For those who have not seen a previous event, Battle of the Buildings consists of a series of mini-games played out on the gym by teams of personnel from every school building (there are six, including the Administration). Teams take turns against each other until the battle produces a winner.
Last year, the gym grandstands filled with onlookers. Students from every grade and their parents showed up to the event.
Madison Kroner, who was a freshman last year at the Battle of the Buildings, recants the experience.
“It was a lot of people,” Kroner said. “It was really cool seeing teachers doing silly things that you don’t normally see them doing.”
The event’s organizers are aiming for an even bigger turnout this year. They want to fill the stands to the creaking point, but for what purpose?
“First and foremost, it’s fun,” Lewis explained. “It is a good time, the gym gets packed with people, and it’s just fun to be with your buddies and watch teachers make a big goose of themselves… But even more importantly, it goes to Dollars for Scholars, which is ultimately the scholarship fund for all the students. So coming to Battle of the Buildings, is really a way [for them] to support themselves.”
The Battle is coming up abruptly, though. This Thursday the buildings will clash, and tickets are sold at the door, but only for the event (not the pizza party). Their sales are limited, so buying in advance is generally a better idea. Buy tickets directly from Chuck Abbott or go to the lobby in the beginning of the day to attain your Battle of the Buildings experience.
