Ray Lewis tackles Jeremi Johnson in the 2006 season.
After 228 regular-season games, 50 career takeaways, 12 Pro Bowl appearances, and two Super Bowl wins, Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis retired after a 17 year career. However, the question still remains; what will Ray Lewis do next?
Reportedly, Ray Lewis is close to joining ESPN as an analyst on Monday nights.
While some are excited to see Lewis on the big screen out of uniform, others have been very critical of the former linebacker.
Many are saying that he does not use proper grammar and may not be cut out for announcing, but others believe Lewis is meant for television.
He is funny and charismatic, and when he talks, people listen. He has been an inspiration for students everywhere, both as an athlete and as a community supporter.
Lewis supports the community with his non-profit charity organization, the Ray Lewis 52 Foundation, which helps provide assistance to the disadvantaged youth of Maryland.
Lewis was a major leader for the Ravens throughout his NFL career, both on and off the field. He was a constant supporter of his team members and was a media favorite. He appeared on numerous press conferences and interviews where he charmed audiences with his pep-talks and optimism, such as the pre-game talk he had with the team right before the Super Bowl.
Furthermore, Lewis knows the game very well. He’d been playing for 17 years– that’s 17 years of studying not only the Raven’s plays, but those of the teams he has been up against.

Ray Lewis rests during a game.

He would also be great for television because he is a well known player, and football lovers all over America would tune in to hear what he has to say about upcoming games and players.
He travels all over to motivate and inspire people. Last year, Lewis traveled to South Carolina to speak to the Clemson Tigers before their big game against N.C. State.  Lewis is a great, professional motivational speaker who knows the game of football like the back of his hand.
However, many simply dislike him because of his involvement in the murder trial back in 2000, which should not hinder his chances of being an analyst for the sport he loves. He was cleared of all charges of murder, but was charged with a misdemeanor of obstruction of justice and fined $250,000 by the NFL, according to NBC Sports. Although he does have a misdemeanor, there are plenty of football players who were convicted of worse crimes than that.
Another thing Lewis is planning to do in his retirement is support his son, Ray Lewis III, as he plays for the Miami Hurricanes, Lewis’s alma mater. Lewis plans on attending every game next season and to support his son in every way possible, according to NBC Sports.
Whatever Lewis does in his retirement, I’m sure everyone, especially Ravens fans, will be keeping an eye out for their favorite former linebacker in the coming months.
