Students Gain Daily Newscasts, Lose Daily Homeroom

Principal Kevin Molin cut homeroom from the regular schedule for the 2018-2019 school year.

Molin sorted out how long period one and two would be on a regular schedule, allowing enough time for the Courier get set up and run an eight-minute newscast at the end of period two.

For development days, Molin added homeroom after second period, so students will not miss a lesson if they are late too school.

Molin said, “there always has to be a development day schedule because the link crew leaders have to do activities with the freshmen.”

Video production teacher Tim Hare has dealt with late student arrivals with his homeroom in the past, something that would hinder the creation of the Daily Newscasts.

¨We have had students in the past come in late and get to my classroom right at 7:43 a.m., and we can’t be having [the students running the newscast] come in at that time because we start announcements right at 7:45 a.m….if they are going to be doing it everyday,” said Hare. “ that causes a delay to the start of announcements, and we also want to have the opportunity to do newscasts and get highlights from previous nights like scores from the high school sports.”

As of right now, Molin said the regular schedule will not change because the school wants to see how students and staff  like this schedule. If negative reviews are received, they would change it back to the previous year’s schedule with a daily homeroom.

“So far it’s a success. We have been able to get positive feedback from a number of teachers throughout the building and more students are engaging…,” said Hare.

Molin and Hare hope that this schedule will be a success and to get feedback from most of the students by the end of the school year.
