Susquehannock student Andrea Hebel earned a silver medal for journalism at the state level of the 2018 Scholastic Arts and Writing Contest.

Two Southern York County School District students recently earned recognition for their literary works in the 2018 Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards.

Susquehannock High School student Annie Hebel won a silver medal for journalism in the national level of the 2018 Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards. This is the third consecutive year that Susquehannock students have earned recognition at the national level for writing. Hebel’s piece, ‘Concussed: The Silent Epidemic Sweeping America’s Favorite Sport,’ earned her national merit for the second year in a row.

“Annie spent an incredible amount of time researching and writing this article,” said Susquehannock English teacher and creative writing workshop advisor Tim Groth. “This is such an impressive accomplishment.”

At the middle school level, Southern Middle School 7th grader Bea Ricafort earned a gold key for her collection of poems, ‘Notes borrowed from Thoughtless’ in the Central Pennsylvania Scholastic Arts and Writing Competition. Her poem collection is advancing to the national level of competition.

“Bea had the honor of reading her poem, ‘A Writer’s Melodic Straitjacket,’ during the awards ceremony at the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg,” said Kate Newland, Southern Middle School teacher. “She read her poem with great expression to a very large audience, and I was very proud of her,” Newland said.

The nationally recognized Scholastic Arts and Writing Program awards students for their creative excellence in 28 different categories. Students in grades 7 – 12 are eligible to showcase their talents and have their entries judged by artistic and literary professionals.
