A ‘Far Cry’ from bad

Far Cry 3 is the third installation in the Far Cry series. Rated M for mature due to the graphic material, it was released December 4th, 2012 by Ubisoft for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC.

Far Cry 3 is an open-world video game that takes place on a tropical island infested with pirates and an old-fashioned tribe of warriors. Jason, the main character of the game, is a rich kid who just wants to relax. He’s on vacation at a tropical, seemingly peaceful island with his friends and older brother. All seems fine at first; he just has fun, plays games, and enjoys his company. Then, pirates ambush him, taking him and his group hostage for ransom.

Jason manages to escape and runs into a tribe that believes him to be a great, reincarnated warrior from their tribe’s legend. Now, with the aid of the tribe and his new, mystical tattoos that give him powers and skills, Jason sets off to rescue his friends.

The game truly is an open-world experience. The player can explore the entire island and basically do whatever he wants while embarking on the main quest to save Jason’s friends.

The player can do side-quests given by tribesmen, and hunt down animals for both their food and their skin, which can be turned to leather and used as armor. He can also loot pirates, using their money to buy better weapons, armor, upgrades, and so on. There’s so much to do; the player could diverge from the main quest for hours upon hours.

The game play is in first person, which gives it a fun, almost real feel. You know, as real as one can be with a punk that suddenly turns into an expert hunter, fighter, and killer in a matter of hours. As the player progresses, he acquires newer tattoos that go alongside the old ones, each giving him new powers and more abilities and skills.

Most battles are meant to be done while hidden. Quick assassinations and sneak attacks are the most ideal way to fight the pirates because he really is only one man. If Jason makes a wrong move, they call reinforcements, which can, and most likely, will kill him. So unless the player is feeling bold and wants to charge into the mayhem, the tactics will most likely consist of sneaking around and hiding.

The graphics are amazing; the beauty of the game will widen the player’s eyes, drop his jaw, and maybe even make him forget about the bloodthirsty animals around him and the friends that he’s supposed to save.

All in all, the game is great. With its fun gameplay, gorgeous graphics, and endless things to do, it is a game that is worth the sticker price and will stay on one’s gaming shelf for a long, long time.
