Southern York County School District former teacher, coach, and athletic director Chuck Abbott was recently awarded the Susquehannock Alumni Association’s eighth annual Alumni Spirit Award. The award was presented during half time of Susquehannock High School’s homecoming football game on October 20, 2017 and is awarded to an individual who exemplifies outstanding school spirit for an extended period of time.

Abbott began his teaching career at Southern Middle School in 1981. In addition to teaching, he served as an assistant junior high football coach, junior varsity baseball coach, and assistant athletic director. He was the head baseball coach at Susquehannock from 1985 through 2002. Abbott was appointed acting athletic director during the 2002-2003 school year and began his role as the full time athletic director in the 2003-2004 school year. He remained the Susquehannock athletic director until his retirement in 2016.

“During his service, Mr. Abbott tirelessly served our students, coaches, and community,” said Dr. Wayne McCullough from the Susquehannock Alumni Association. “He is well known throughout the entire state for his actions to promote sportsmanship in high school athletics. Chuck is respected and revered by students, athletes, coaches, and his peers,” he said. “Thank you to Mr. Abbott for his dedication and unselfish service.”

Abbott currently serves as the executive director of the York-Adams Interscholastic Athletic Association.
