Southern York County School District Students Earn Awards in Scholastic Arts and Writing Contest

Megan Watkins’ photograph “Allison Wonderland” earned an honorable mention.

Students from Susquehannock High School and Southern Middle School earned awards in the 2017 South Central Pennsylvania Scholastic Arts and Writing Competition.  The nationally recognized program recognizes students for their creative excellence in 28 categories of art and writing.

The following Susquehannock High School students earned awards in the competition:

  • Freshman Ian Achterberg earned a gold key for his essay “The Meaning of Metathesiophobia.”
  • Freshman Emily Heiser earned a gold key for her critical essay “Africa:  What Could Have Been.”
  • Freshman Kristen Krobot earned a silver key for her poetry collection “Five Stages of Grief.”
  • Freshman Amber McClure earned a silver key for her poetry collection “What Living Has Taught Me.”
  • Sophomore Ellie Stevenson earned an honorable mention for her short story “Mystery Man.”
  • Sophomore Megan Watkins earned an honorable mention for her photography project “Allison Wonderland.”

The following Southern Middle School students earned awards in the competition:

  • 8th grader Sam Timlin earned a gold key for her digital art “A Complicated Star.”
  • 8th grader Reagan Gorham earned a silver key for her short story “Of Clear Springs and Clear Minds.”

These students will be invited to a recognition ceremony at the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg on March 11, 2017.  Gold key recipients Achterberg, Heiser, and Timlin advanced to the national competition.  In addition, Timilin’s artwork will be on display in the State Museum of Pennsylvania for the second consecutive year.

“Congratulations to all of these students for being recognized by such a prestigious competition,” said Timothy Groth, Susquehannock High School English teacher.
