Merry Christmas from Batman

“Deshi basara!” This phrase, meaning “rise,” has been made popular among fans by the final installment of the Dark Knight trilogy.  The Dark Knight Rises came out in theatres on July 20 this year, grossing around $448 million in the U.S. The DVD is now available, having been released December 4

At the end of The Dark Knight, Batman, played by Christian Bale, vows to take the heat for Harvey Dent/Two Face’s murders so that Dent’s image is not tarnished. The Dark Knight Rises picks up eight years later with Bruce Wayne living as a recluse, and the mob finally taken down. However, things in Gotham never stay calm for long, and the villain Bane, played by Tom Hardy, comes to wreak havoc. Also in the picture is Selina Kyle/Catwoman, played by Anne Hathaway, a grey-area character. She is a self-serving criminal, but also holds promise as a new romantic interest for Batman. Bruce’s more reasonable love interest appears to be Miranda Tate, played by Marion Cotillard, an employee with ideas of new energy. Another new character is Officer John Blake, played by Joseph Gordon Levitt, a young cop hoping to convince Batman to return to crime fighting.

Returning to the scene are Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon, Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox, and Michael Caine as the ever-loyal Alfred Pennyworth. These are not the only characters from the first two films that make cameos.

Fans are very excited about the recent DVD release. Senior Shannon McNeal has not yet seen the film, but hopes to soon.

“It’s nice that it’s available now,” McNeal commented, as buying it is easier than finding time to see it in theaters.

Teacher Matt Amberman is also eager to see the film.

“It’s on my Christmas list,” Amberman said, noting that if he does not receive it, he will buy it himself.

The film is a common Christmas wish, especially the Blu-ray edition.  The film was not made in 3D and thus, is not available in such format. However, the film was praised for its cinematography and costuming, so it is still visually stunning.

The Dark Knight Rises is available at any store that sells DVDs, so one can easily buy it as a gift. The regular DVD costs $17.96 at Wal-Mart, while the Blu-ray version costs $18.99. Warning: Do not be surprised if the recipient imitates Christian Bale’s gravely voice after viewing.
