Black Friday fun

Millions of shoppers stay up the night after their Thanksgiving festivities to take part in the largest store-to-store sales opportunity of the year, Black Friday.

This year the amount of Black Friday shoppers increased from 212 million to 226 million shoppers, which could be due to the early openings of many stores.

In most recent years, stores have begun opening around midnight the Friday following Thanksgiving in order to promote their products through various sales tactics.

English teacher Jessica Beste, who goes Black Friday shopping every year, noticed one difference this year about the stores.

“Stores were opening earlier,” said Beste.” “Instead of starting at midnight some stores were opening at eight-thirty or nine at night, so I think that was a big draw for a lot of people to go right after thanksgiving.”

Wal-Mart even opened at 8:00 P.M. in order to draw a bigger number of potential buyers to the store.

Sophomore Shane Harris scored a great deal on a 40-inch flat screen at Wal-Mart shortly after it opened.

Harris remarks on the large popularity of the store.

“I’m glad I didn’t get there as soon as it opened, or else it’d be a mad house,” said Harris.

Other popular stores like Target and Best Buy have also been well-known as important stops on any Black Friday shopper’s lists.

Besides just these stand alone chains, a large number of people also make appearances at malls to find deals at their favorite apparel or specialty stores.

First time Black Friday shopper, senior Emily Fodel didn’t realize how low the prices really could get.

“I wasn’t expecting prices to drop that much,” said Fodel. “I was expecting them to be a little cheaper but not 50% off!.”

But Black Friday isn’t all about the deals. Just the Black Friday experience is a large draw for people.

“It’s … the excitement of starting the Holiday shopping season, … going out, … staying up late, … getting Starbucks, and doing the beginning of your shopping,” said Beste.
