NAfME chooses senior for conference

Senior Colleen Mc Gonigle, has been chosen to sing at The National Association for Music Education (NAfME) 2013 all-Eastern Conference Mixed Choral ensemble and will be traveling to Hartford, Connecticut to sing April 4-6, 2013.

To be nominated to sing at this event, one has to already be a part of the all-state choral ensemble, as well as still attend high school the year they go.

In previous years, Mc Gonigle was selected to sing for the PMEA All-State choir. “To be selected from hundreds of other kids from 13 different states feels pretty awesome… especially being the only one from York,” said Mc Gonigle. “Going through 3 different levels of competition was hard, but definitely worth it.”

For Mc Gonigle, it really depended on which competition she had to train for, but in any case, she knew she had to improve each time to advance to the next level. “Last year I auditioned at districts. I had to wait a year for my final results, but about 2 weeks ago they announced the nominees.”

Through everything Mc Gonigle does, there is always room for improvement, no matter what the event. “I think I did well, but I didn’t get first… so of course there will always be time for more practice and improvement.”

Mc Gonigle is a soprano, which is the highest voice placement for males and females in a choir. “There was definitely more competition,” said Mc Gonigle. “The women singing soprano tend to be more of a ‘diva’ with their voices… it was very intimidating.”

To some new or younger kids in Susky’s choir who may be intimidated by the competition Mc Gonigle went through to get her spot in NAfME, one can audition for an ensemble, like Chanticleer, to help them build their skills, as well as confidence.

Chanticleer is a select honors choir our school has who sing more advanced a capella songs. To participate in this ensemble, auditions are held. In these auditions, one will be tested on sight-reading as well as testing one’s voice range.

Mc Gonigle has been a part of the Susky choir her whole high school career, as well as Chanticleer. “Being apart of it for this long really helps to encourage new kids to try harder, as well as make us as a group have more confidence,” said Mc Gonigle.

Recently, Chanticleer has been chosen to sing at the PA Christmas Show, being held at the PA Farm Show Complex held on November 30.
