Fun in the winter weather

Time to enjoy the fun of the winter season.

The weather has changed from warm summer days to cold winter snows, but that doesn’t mean one has to be stuck in the house all winter. There is plenty to do around Southern York County during the winter season.

   1. Susquehannock Winter Concert- On Sunday, Dec. 16, the Susky band, orchestra, and chorus will be performing their yearly winter concert, which will include festive holiday songs. The concert starts at 2:00 PM. The orchestra, jazz band, and chorus will also perform their Holiday Concert in school the day before the holiday break, Dec. 21.

Senior violinist Alyssa Denis is very excited for the holiday concert.

“The theme [this year] is Christmas at the Movies, so we are playing a lot of christmas music [that comes from] movies. It should be a lot of fun to play and for students to watch,” said Denis

   2.  “A Festival of Lights” at Rocky Ridge Park- This Christmas themed light show features over 600,000 multicolored lights throughout a half mile walking trail through Oak Timbers Picnic Area. The show opened the Friday after Thanksgiving and will be open through December 31; the park will be closed Dec. 24 and 25. The light show will be operating Mon.-Fri. 6:00-9:00 PM, and Sat.-Sun 5:00 t0 9:00 PM.

   3. Avalanche Express Snow Tubing at Heritage Hills- Located off of exit 18 on I-83,

Snowboarding at Roundtop is sure to be tons of fun.

Avalanche Express features snow tubing and a new ice skating rink. The hours of operation for the months Dec.-Feb. are as follows: Mon.-Thurs. 4:00-10:00 PM, Fri. 4:00-11:00 PM, Sat. 9:00 AM-11:00 PM, Sun. 10:00 AM-10:00 PM. Tubing day passes vary day to day: Mon.-Thurs. costs $20, Fri. costs $24, and Sat. and Sun. costs $30. The ice skating passes cost $6 Mon.-Thurs. and $8 Fri.-Sun.

   4. York City Ice Arena- Enjoy a fun day of ice skating at the York City Ice Arena. Weekday afternoon sessions are Mondays and Fridays from 1:30-3:00 PM; admissions costs $5 and skates rentals costs $3. Evening and weekend sessions are as follows: Weds. from 7:00-8:30 PM, Fri. from 7:30-9:30 PM, Sat. from 1:00-3:45 PM, and Sun. 1:45-3:45 PM. Admissions during the evening and weekend sessions costs $7 and skates rentals costs $3.

   5. Roundtop Mountain Resort- At the Roundtop Mountain Resort, students can enjoy a day filled with skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. Junior ski club member Austin Scott often travels to Roundtop with the ski club.

“Roundtop is really well managed and a great place to hangout with your friends, and they always have snow, which I would call a plus,” said Scott.

   6. Christmas in Hershey-This annual holiday event, located in Hershey Park, includes rides,

lights, and a show. One can enjoy fun rides, holiday shopping, and hershey’s own hot chocolate at the Hersheypark Christmas Candylane. Afterwards, one can catch the Christmas in Chocolate Town holiday show, featuring Top 40 holiday songs. To close out the day of holiday cheer, one can take a drive through the Hershey Sweet Lights, a two mile long animated light show.

   7. Holiday Movies- Students can get a group of friends together over the holiday break to see one of the many movies scheduled to come out over the holidays. A few anticipated movies to come out through the month of December include The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Dec. 14), The Guilt Trip (Dec. 19), Monsters, Inc. 3D (Dec. 19), The Impossible (Dec. 21), This Is 40 (Dec. 21), Parental Guidance (Dec. 25), and Les Miserables (Dec. 25).
