Coming off of a massive win against Cumberland Valley, the girls lacrosse team faced off against Hempfield in the District 3 Semifinals at Hershey High School on Tuesday, May 19.

Despite the 16-12 loss, the team put up an impressive fight, playing earnestly until the last second.  According to head coach Steve Marshner, the girls put in a commendable amount of effort against a formidable opponent who challenged the team in speed.  Senior Ashley Valway scored six goals, sophomore Gena Speights had four and juniors Maddie Ellis and Morgan LeBlanc each contributed one.  Full coverage of the game can be found on GameTimePA.

Advancing to the semifinals was already a groundbreaking achievement by the team as it had never been done in the school’s history.

Junior and attack player Maddie Ellis, who has been playing lacrosse for nine years, is ecstatic about the team’s accomplishments during this season.

“It’s amazing,” said Ellis. “Being able to do a lot of the stuff that we’ve done as a team has really helped us develop and grow together.”

Along with the team’s revolutionary participation in the semifinals, both the offense and defense set records during the season as well.  With 18 wins and just 3 losses overall this season, it is clear that the team has performed admirably.

Marshner has been coaching the school’s team for three years and is thrilled to have been a part of the girls’ accomplishments this season.

“They earned the right to be there,” said Marshner. “It’s been an honor to coach them and be on the journey throughout the year.”

A strong sense of camaraderie within the team has been extremely beneficial in all of its endeavors.

Senior and goalie Amber Orner has been playing lacrosse for six years and attributes much of the team’s success this season to the unity and companionship among all of the players.

“This year, our team is really close,” said Orner. “We’re closer than we’ve ever been, and that has really helped [us make it this far].”

The monumental season continued as the ladies played in the consolation game at Lower Dauphin Middle School on Thursday, May 21 against Kennard-Dale for a shot at the third spot in the state tournament.  The resulting score was 15-11 with Kennard-Dale victorious.
