Susky Celebrates Love

It is the day of love and romance; it is the one day a year that you can be a mushy romantic and not be made fun of for it;  it is February 14, or, as most people refer to it as, Valentine’s Day, the time to take that special someone out to show them how much you care.

The day of romance is named for a Christian martyr by the name of Saint Valentine,  dating back to the fifth century. People all over the country celebrate the day with roses, chocolates and romantic dinners at their loved one’s favorite restaurants. Whether you’ve been dating someone for a week or a year, you find yourself enjoying what the holiday has to offer, even if that empties out your wallet. $130.97 is the estimated amount that people will spend on Valentine’s Day.

Teenagers especially enjoy the romance and the surprises that come with the holiday. Senior Nick Umezawa talks about how his plans involved Umezawa’s and his girlfriend’s first date.

“I know she’s a huge fan of Japanese, so I’m going to take her to a nice sushi restaurant,” said Umezawa.

He and his girlfriend have been together for six months, and he explained how he wanted to make their first Valentine’s Day together special.

It’s not just teenagers who enjoy the romance, but adults do as well. Couples who have been together for years continue their traditions each year.

English teacher Jessica Beste talks of her plans with her boyfriend of seven years.

“Every year we splurge… and go to the Melting pot,” said Beste.

Due to the expensiveness of the restaurant, Valentine’s Day is the one day of year they go.

Since Valentine’s Day is the day of love, no one really takes the time to think about those who don’t have a special someone to share the holiday with. People may go out with friends and celebrate the holiday their own way, or someone might just choose to stay in and enjoy time by themselves.

Junior Evan Brown talks about his plans for the day since he has no one to share the day with.

“I’m going to order a pizza, watch Netflix and cry a lot,” said Brown.

Many people may be doing the exact same thing as Brown, but just not want to admit it. Most people believe that it doesn’t matter what you do, but as long as you have fun and are spending time with that special someone, the day is going to be great no matter what.
