Monday, August 25th was television’s biggest night on at the 66th Annual Primetime Emmy’s.

The biggest names in Hollywood glammed up and headed over to the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, California to see who was the best in the business. The event was headlined by new Late Night host, Seth Meyers, and the nominees included big TV series like Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, and Modern Family. At the end of the evening with all of the awards distributed, Modern Family and Breaking Bad came out on top.

Meyers, a Saturday Night Live alumnus, initiated the star-studded night with a standard monologue, poking fun at his previous home network, NBC; “HBO has 99 nominations tonight, the most of any network, not to be outdone, NBC is also a network. HBO, I’ve got to say, HBO is that kid you grew up with that did way better than you expected,” said Meyers. This was the second award show for Meyers to host with the 2011 ESPY Awards already under his belt.

Senior Alexis Anelli loved having Seth Meyers as a host. “I watched him on SNL, and I’m used to his comedy,” says Anelli. “He handled it really well.”

The evening was kept alive with Meyers delivering his best jokes and bringing out some of his best friends, like Andy Samberg, a fellow SNL star. Samberg presented singer Weird Al’ Yankovic, and joined him in performing a parody of theme songs from Game of Thrones, Mad Men, and Modern Family.

At the Emmy’s, more than 70 television shows, miniseries, and award shows were honored with nominations.

Junior Karah Sweitzer was rooting for her personal favorite shows, AMC Network’s Breaking Bad and HBO’s Game of Thrones.

“It didn’t surprise me Breaking Bad won,” said Sweitzer, “but it surprised me Game of Thrones didn’t win.”

Game of Thrones went into the award show with a total of 19 nominations and 4 wins, whereas Breaking Bad had a total of 16 nominations and 5 wins.

Anelli has never seen Breaking Bad, but was excited for Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance (8 nominations; 2 wins) , CBS’s The Big Bang Theory (7 nominations; 2 wins), and ABC’s Modern Family (10 nominations; 3 wins). Modern Family won big on Monday and also celebrated their 5th year in row winning Outstanding Comedy Series.

“I have watched every season,” says Anelli. “It just gets better, and I love all of the actors.”

In light of all the festivities, the Emmy’s added a more somber moment when they recognized fallen actors, directors, and writers from 2013-2014. The “Brave” singer, Sara Bareilles, gave the audience chills while performing the song “Smile” by Nat King Cole during the memorial which honored those like Russell Johnson (Gilligan’s Island), James Avery (Fresh Prince of Bel Air), James Garner (Maverick and TheNotebook), and Robin Williams (Mrs. Doubtfire and Aladdin).

After the song, Billy Crystal, an award winning comedic actor, moved the theater to tears in his tribute to friend, Robin Williams. “It’s hard to talk about him in the past because he was present in so many of our lives,” said Crystal.

Crystal went on to describe Williams as loving, supportive, and “…the brightest star in the comedy galaxy.”

Anelli described the justice given to Robin Williams as “better than the VMA’s. They didn’t make a joke of it, … everyone was waiting for it, and it went really well.”

Sweitzer enjoyed the fact that they didn’t dwell on the subject and added that she still isn’t over the sudden passing of Robin Williams.

As for next year’s Primetime Emmy’s, the host has still been undecided. Sweitzer expressed that she would enjoy seeing Seth Meyers repeat his role as host, while Anelli hopes for new Tonight Show host, Jimmy Fallon to take the mic.

“I love Jimmy Fallon!” said Anelli. “I watch his show because he is a beautiful human being.”
