Volleyball off to great start

The girls volleyball team is off to another great start this season, remaining undefeated (8-0).

The team may have lost valuable players this year, but they have come together as a new team to be just as powerful.

Sophomore Abby Bentz expressed how the team no longer relies on a couple players, but everyone has an individual job that must be done perfectly in order for the team to meld properly.

“At each practice, we give it our all, and we know it will pay off in the end,” said Bentz. “We have to work hard and show other teams we have multiple threats.”

Being one of the only underclassmen on varsity, Bentz said it was very exciting, but there is also much more pressure.

“I have to stay focused at all times in order to show I belong on the team,” said Bentz. “This year is much more challenging than when I was on Junior Varsity last year.”

Senior player and team captain Leah Deter is very optimistic about the team this year.

“The team has come together very well,” said Deter. “We are settling in to a new line-up, and it is very fun.”

Even though key players were lost, such as Sherelle Walker and Hannah Bentz, players are stepping up to fill the holes.

Deter explained that it is all about keeping their game-play at the level they know they are at.

“We have really great team chemistry,” said Deter. “We all really inspire each other to do well.”

The Warriors have a real shot at making it far into counties, districts, and states.

Dig Pink

A big event for the volleyball team occurred October 4 for a breast cancer benefit, Dig Pink.

The new tradition has been going on for four years, after the Side Out Foundation came up with the idea that inspired the girls team to get involved.

The team sold $10.00 t-shirts that were light pink and said “Get Your Pink On.”  They also got the school hyped for the big event in which the team played in honor of those who have battled breast cancer.

The event ended up bringing in $2,257 for the cause.

Senior Alex Zappardino won the Prince of Pink title, accompanying the warrior win over the Red Lion Lady Lions  three easy games to take victory.

“It was really fun being able to compete with the other students to see who would win,” said Zappardino. “And we got to help raise money for an important cause.”
