Peyton Manning not as efficient after week 17

Somewhere in the midst of the 43-8 beatdown the Denver Broncos took at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII, Peyton Manning went from a record-setting quarterback back to a playoff failure.

With a postseason record of 11 wins, 12 losses and eight first game losses, Manning is commonly known for choking in the big games, especially in winter.

Despite a Super Bowl victory in 2007, Manning has a reputation that two interceptions against the Seahawks certainly did not help.

Broncos fan Lexi Williams is all too familiar with his reputation for disappointment, but disagrees.

“I feel terrible about it,” she said.  “He has one bad game, and all of the sudden he’s a bad quarterback.”

This reputation will be something he will always live with because Peyton Manning cannot get things done in the postseason.  The long-standing rumors that he cannot win in the cold are true: he is 3-7 when the kickoff temperature is below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Manning excels in warm weather but struggles when the temperature goes under 32 degrees.

Despite setting records in touchdowns, passing yards and four touchdown games in the regular season, he faltered on the biggest stage.  Manning, who is known for preparing for everything from his playbook to what Gatorade he will drink at halftime, was outdone by the “Legion of Boom.”

Of course, he will always be known as one of the best quarterbacks ever. He has dominated defenses every season since entering the league in 1998, at least in the first 16 games.  He came back from nervous system surgery in 2012 and made it back to the AFC playoffs and then the Super Bowl.

When a Colt, Manning operated with far fewer weapons than he does now.

But when the playoffs start and the gloves go on, he is about average.  He seems to throw his immortal football knowledge out the window and think it is right for him to throw across his body and to scramble out of the pocket.

Maybe it is just that he runs out of steam at the end of the season, but there is just something about him; he throws differently, and he sees the field differently.  Manning might be the best quarterback ever, but he will never have the jewelry to prove it.

Manning covets a second Super Bowl ring.
