‘The fault is in your stars’ for not reading John Green’s heart-wrenching novel

Critically acclaimed author John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars has been a common topic of discussion in the world of books. Green is the author of Looking for Alaska, An Abundance of Katherines, Paper Towns, The Fault in Our Stars, and is also the co-author of Will Grayson, Will Grayson with writer David Levithan.  Green’s latest book, The Fault in Our Stars, came out last year on January 10, according to Goodreads.  Green signed all of the first editions of the books, so if one happened across the book right after it was released, they may have been lucky enough to buy an authentic signed copy.

The book focuses on Hazel Grace Lancaster, a sixteen-year-old girl, who has Stage IV Thyroid Cancer.  To get her out of the house and make friends, Hazel’s mother makes her go to a cancer support group for people around her age in the basement of a local church.  She becomes friends with a fellow patient named Isaac, who has a rare form of eye cancer.  One day, Isaac brings his friend Augustus Waters to the support group.  Augustus had Osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer that caused him to lose a leg.  However, he is in remission by the time he meets Hazel, and these two youngsters are  immediately drawn to one another.  A friendship soon ensues and, later, a romance.  Senior Leah Deter especially enjoyed this book.  “It was really emotional, and [it had] a good plot line,” said Deter.  “It was exciting and suspenseful, but then there was also romance in it.  It was a good mix of genres, and I love John Green.”  The story has a balance of serious and lighthearted moments, and it contains characters that are easy to become attached to, which makes the ending so heartbreaking.  The book is well-written, and Green knows how to tell a moving story about love and friendship.

The rights for The Fault in Our Stars have been picked up by Fox 2000, according to John Green’s website, and Josh Boone is going to be the director.  Shailene Woodley has been cast as Hazel Grace Lancaster, according to Green and IMDB.   The Fault in Our Stars is an extremely moving story that has equal parts of humor, tragedy, and happiness, all told through likeable characters.
