‘Phantom of the Opera’: A high school theatre success

The Phantom of the Opera, a Broadway classic and now a high school theater success, starred some of Susquehannock’s most talented students.

Some of the star performers included senior Kayla Anelli, junior Jenni Ferg, senior Nathan Coulter, senior Brian Bailone, senior Courtney Reed, junior Bryna Mullins, junior Zach Galante, freshman Karly Matthews, sophomore Caraleigh Stifler and many others.

The show took place the weekend of April 5  with one show Friday,  two shows on Saturday, and a show on Sunday. All three shows were extremely well attended with two almost completely sold out.  It was evident that the entire cast put their all into making their performance one of the most memorable.

Director Will Jenkins believes that the show was a success and that the special effects helped add to the performance.

“ The technical stuff, the fog, the boat, and the fact that high school students performed a show created for adults [ was impressive],” Jenkins said.

All aspects of the show, including the vocals, the set, the special effects, and the music, were stellar due to all the hard work, effort, and practice.

Senior Kayla Anelli, who played Christine in cast A of the musical,  feels the show was a success.

“ I believe it went really well. We were worried that we wouldn’t be ready because we had less time to prepare this year, but everything all came together perfectly,” said Anelli.

Anelli, along with all the actors, proved their vocal talent as they sang and performed very dramatically and hit some very high notes with perfection. Along with talented vocals the set was top-notch with elaborate decorations including the chandelier and the boat used in Act 1 during the song “Phantom of the Opera.”   The pit orchestra also did an amazing job adding to the show’s suspense, providing the backbone to the musical.

Senior Courtney Reed, who played Carlotta in cast A, believes rehearsals readily prepared the cast for their show.

“We have practiced for two hours every night since January…. and our show turned out awesomely,” said Reed.

The show overall was highly successful and all the hard work of everyone involved paid off.
