Athletes make hazing disappear

Stop hazing before it starts. Image by: Gina Corey

In April, Asya Trowell was beaten in a sorority hazing ritual at Penn State, resulting in the expulsion of three students. Many sports teams, sororities, marching bands, and other clubs/ organizations use hazing as a “right of passage.

For Susquehannock’s sports teams, clubs, and organizations, hazing is not tolerated. According to Athletic Director Chuck Abbott, hazing is  recognized by the school district as “any activity that recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental health, physical health, or safety of a student for the purpose of intimidation or membership in or in affiliation with any organization recognized by the Board of Education.” This includes any Susquehannock club, sport, or other extracurricular activity. Senior David Fodel believes that Susky does not have a hazing problem.

“I don’t think there is [a hazing problem] because I don’t see it,” said Fodel. “I walk through the halls all the time, and I see nobody who is being discriminated against.” Freshmen Nason Collins also believes that Susquehannock does a very good job of treating everyone equally. “I think the teachers and students here are better than that. They know hazing is bad and wrong, so they don’t do it,” said Collins. Although hazing is not seen very much here at Susky, students are asked to be proactive against hazing; if one  sees it or hears about it, either report it, or ask the hazer to stop. Hazing can be in the form of name calling, belittling, and even a “right of passage” ritual. “Nobody should have to go through a hazing, whether they think it is major or minor . . . Always report it so that some corrective action can be taken,” said Abbott. This corrective action can range from suspension from the extracurricular activity to suspension from school. Promoting a sense of unity in one’s sport teams, clubs, and all around school experience will help stop hazing, because in the words of Abbott, “We are all one here.”
