Swimming Senior Night

Many watched as 18 seniors swam in their last season meet on Thursday, February 7th at the Shrewsbury YMCA.
Prior to the meet, parents escorted their swimmers past the crowd as an announcer shared the senior’s future plans.
For their senior night, the Warriors competed against New Oxford and came out with a win for both the boys and the girls team. The girls won over New Oxford with a score of 100 to 70, and the boys won with a score of 110 to 60.
Senior Italian foreign exchange student Giulia Pastorelli has enjoyed swimming this season and has felt that the team has been very successful.
“I think our team has done really good this season,” said Pastorelli. “Since we are a very large close knit team, I have made a lot of friends, and it has made my time here more enjoyable.”
A typical swimming meet consists of 22 events, 11 for the men’s team and 11 for the women’s.
Susquehannock took first place in the men’s 200 yard medley, both the men and women’s 200 yard freestyle, both the men and women’s 50 yard freestyle, men and women’s 100 yard freestyle, men and women’s 500 yard freestyle, both men and women’s 200 yard freestyle relay, men’s 100 yard backstroke, men’s 100 yard breaststroke, and men’s 400 yard freestyle relay.
Senior Sean Kaliszak  won the 50 free, 100 breast, and participated in the winning 200 medley and 400 free relay teams. While Kaliszak is excited about his future, he is hesitant about leaving the team.
“It stinks because the team has such a good atmosphere, and we are so close as a team,” said Kaliszak. “We have all been able to push each other to do better and get better times.”
As he watches all the seniors leave the swim team, coach Brian Wingert  is excited to see who will fill these open slots on the team next season.
“I’m happy for the seniors, but it will be a big loss for the team since 18 seniors will be graduating this year,” said Wingert. “It was good that both the boys and girls performed outstandingly on their senior night and were able to both end the regular season with a win.”
The team will continue to compete and go on to counties.
“I think that our team is good enough to win counties and will hopefully continue on in competition,” said Pastorelli.
