Behind Amber Eyes

Some students received an Amber Alert issued on Monday, January 21 when a 5-year-old girl was abducted in Philadelphia.

An Amber Alert is a text-ed alert that is set out to specific regions within a city or county to various smartphone owners (based on service provider) after a child has been reported missing. According to ABCNews, the 5-year-old girl, whose name was not released, was abducted from her school and taken to an unknown location while she was blindfolded. ABCNews also states that she was found on Tuesday at a playground in Delaware County while wearing only a T-shirt.

Senior Conor Ellington, one of many to have received said text, voiced his initial confusion.

“I got a text on my phone that said that some girl was abducted in Philadelphia. I didn’t know what to think about it,” said Ellington. “Later, I got a text that said she was found, so that’s good.”

The girl was taken to a Philadelphia hospital where she was reunited with her mother. The doctors examining her say that she is expected to make a full recovery. However, the girl has shown signs of sexual assault; she was found wearing only a T-shirt.

Senior Matt Noel feels that these situations could be prevented.

“Still sad that people can abduct children. Where are these kids’ parents? The parents need to observe and monitor their kids and not let this happen to anyone else,” said Noel.
