Don’t sass the hand that grades your papers

‘Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.’

It’s an interesting concept and one that can be related to school. Don’t sass the hand that grades your papers.

Over the past few years, the attitudes students have towards teachers has become increasingly disrespectful. More and more students have argued with teachers during class, not treated substitutes with respect, and purposely disrupted their classes.

These things are not only disrespectful to the teachers, but also to other students. Any remark made during class, whether meant to be funny or not, is ultimately disrespectful to teachers; it is just like telling them what they are saying is less important than your joke.

Disrupting class mainly shows a lack of maturity. In middle school it may have been tolerated more; however, in high school, you are expected to be mature enough to make the right decisions and stay focused during class.

On the other hand, staying focused in class doesn’t give students an excuse to argue with a teacher during class. Believe it or not, the teachers did go to college to become knowledgeable on the subject they are teaching. If you have an issue with something a teacher says during class, wait until after class and calmly ask them about it.

Through the four years of high school one is bound to have substitutes; teachers get sick and things happen. The important thing is to respect the substitute teacher you have because being a substitute can be difficult already.

Our regular teachers have been in our classes all year and know how each class works. Substitutes are coming into a new class in the middle of the year for a day or two. They don’t know that your teacher usually lets you pack up two minutes before the bell. However, they do know when students try to take advantage of the fact that they aren’t normally there. Telling your substitute something false is disrespectful to both them and your regular teacher.

These and most other problems could be resolved for the most part if students tried to mature and respect teachers.
