The Susquehannock High School girls’ basketball program, coaches, and fans have been selected for the Gretchen Wolf Swartz Sportsmanship Award for 2016. This is the eighth time that the girls’ basketball program has been chosen for this award.

Each year, the York Chapter of Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Basketball Officials chooses a girls’ and boys’ basketball team from a YAIAA member school. The officials look for examples of good sportsmanship in players, coaches, and fans. Two traveling trophies are awarded annually in recognition of the schools’ good sportsmanship.

The award also qualifies four senior members from the girls’ basketball program to receive scholarships of $20,000, $15,000, $10,000, or $5,000. The scholarships will be awarded in May by the Gretchen Wolf Swartz Scholarship Foundation Board of Directors to players or student managers who apply.

“Since the beginning of this award in 2001, Susquehannock girls’ and boys’ basketball programs have been recognized 13 times for their outstanding display of sportsmanship,” Athletic Director Chuck Abbott said. “With this year’s total, student athletes in both programs have received $83,000 in scholarships from this award.”

Gretchen Wolf Swartz was a York Adams Interscholastic Athletic Association (YAIAA) basketball referee and a former player, who died of leukemia in 1997, at the age of 41. Her fellow officials created the award and scholarship fund in her honor.
