Southern York County School District Athletic Director Chuck Abbott was honored recently for his dedication, leadership, and sportsmanship as part of the Gretchen Wolf Swartz Scholarship Fund. Abbott, who also serves as Executive Director of the York-Adams Interscholastic Athletic Association (YAIAA), was recognized at the boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball games during the 4thAnnual Donnie Swartz Memorial Classic.

“The award came as a complete surprise,” Abbott said. “It was quite an honor and it’s a tribute to the former and present coaches and players that honor Gretchen Wolf Swartz.”

The basketball tournament helps fund the Gretchen Wolf Swartz Scholarship Program, which is awarded annually to eligible seniors, whose basketball programs are recipients of the annual Gretchen Wolf Swartz Sportsmanship Award. The York Chapter of Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Basketball Officials chooses a girls’ and boys’ basketball team.

The Scholarship is named after Gretchen Wolf Swartz, who was a YAIAA basketball referee and a former player, who died of leukemia in 1997, at the age of 41.

This year, up to eight seniors associated with their high school basketball teams will share a total of $100,000 in scholarship money. The seniors may include basketball players, managers, and cheerleaders. The money will be broken into four levels for both the girls’ and boys’ winners. Since 2001, the scholarship fund has risen from $2,000 the first year to $30,000, which was awarded last year.

Since the beginning of this award, Susquehannock girls’ and boys’ basketball programs have been recognized 12 times and senior student athletes have collected a combined total of more than $33,000 in scholarship money, Abbott said.

“I can’t say enough about the York Basketball Chapter and what they have done for the program,” he said. “The way we promote sportsmanship at Southern York County School District is a priority for our sports programs.”
