“It’s Always Sunny” impresses again

The eighth season premiere of the cult-followed television show “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” aired Thursday October 11.

For those who have not watched, the basis of the show consists of the owners of the local hangout putting the silly ideas they come up with into action.

Pop-Pop: The Final Solution

In the season Premiere, the gang, consisting of Mac (Rob McElhenney), Dee (Kaitlin Olson), Frank (Danny DeVito), Charlie (Charlie Day), and Dennis (Glenn Howerton) hear word that Dee and Dennis’ grandfather is sick.

In their Pop-Pop’s Will, they are given the decision whether to pull the plug or not. They have a tough decision to make.

The two go to the hospital to find Frank feeding Pop-Pop soup, which he has been doing for weeks now. Knowing that their grandfather was a Nazi, Frank just wants some “Nazi treasure”.

Back at the bar, Mac and Charlie get word of the situation and Charlie remembers that Pop-Pop gave him a box of old Nazi stuff in the past; including a painting of a dog that Frank gave to Cricket (once a preacher, now crippled bum on the street).

Mac and Charlie believe that this painting is “an original Hitler” and go on a quest to find it, thinking a movie will be made after them like The Divinci Code.

They find out that Cricket has sold the painting for $3 to a dentist.

Back to Dee and Dennis. They are now at their Pop-Pop’s house going through tapes and find one labeled “Summer Camp 1981”. They watch the video and reminisce as they walk hand and hand with their Pop-Pop as children, until they turn the volume up and hear the speech about eliminating the blacks and Jews. Dee and Dennis decide they should pull the plug, but they can’t watch him die.

The two go to the dog pound and buy a few dogs and release them on the streets to feel better.

The episode concludes rapidly, flashing to Mac and Frank walking into the bar with the stolen painting.

Charlie tells them that he painted the painting, causing everyone to become uninterested and forget about it.

Dee and Dennis ultimately decide to give the rights to Lawyer, who pulls the plug. But Pop-Pop is still breathing! Surprised and somewhat frustrated Dee says “How long ‘til he’s not breathing?”

The episode closes with Mac and Charlie in the alley burning the painting. At this time Charlie tells Mac that he painted his painting over the painting he got from Pop-Pop. As they walk away the corner melts from the painting revealing the signature of Adolph Hitler.

Turns out they could have made a movie. Oh well.

The Gang Recycles their Trash

In this episode the gang decides to take action after they grow tired of the trashmen not coming due to an ongoing strike.

Mac, Charlie, and Dennis decide to buy a limousine and some tuxedos, so they can pick up trash in rich neighborhoods while looking classy. Frank and Dee go to the head of the city council to try to steal the trash contract.

After Charlie, Dennis, and Mac realize they can’t keep their tuxedos clean and their limo has been soiled by pounds of bird excrements, they decide to get a van instead.

In the end, Frank and Dee don’t get the contract, and the boys forget about trash after the strike ends. The gang then moves on to their next pointless, yet exciting adventure.

“It’s Always Sunny” is a show not all people can enjoy, but there are those who do love it. The pointless humor, the whacky antics the gang gets into, and the same end result in every episode never gets old. It doesn’t seem like a scripted show, but just a group of people who own a business, argue constantly, and have stupid ideas that they try to put into action.

If that kind of humor is what one may look for; this modern TV show based on reality coupled with hilarious antics and a surprise twist at the end of almost every episode, this may be the show many people have been looking for.
