Students and teachers were encouraged to bring in donations for the homeless during Homeless Awareness Week, November 2-6.  The Aevidum club at Susquehannock sponsored the week at school.

Some of the things students are being asked to donate were: toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, deodorant and more.

This was a good week for students to get involved in due to the fact that they are helping others.

The supplies that were donated will be sent to Southern community services, and some will be kept here to help families that the school works with.

There is an incentive for the students to get involved too.

The homeroom that brought in the most supplies to donate won a breakfast of bagels or donuts.

Donations are very important for the nonprofit organizations who hand out the supplies, in the eyes of  Jill Platts, the advisor of Aevidum.  “Without donations these non-profit organizations can’t help those in need,” said Platts.

The idea of this week being brought to Susquehannock was pitched by  Platts herself to Aevidum.

The importance of the week was huge. “It’s a direct way to reach out to those in need,” said Platts. Susquehannock was not the only school participating; Northeastern High School also participated in the week as well.

At the end of the week the totals for all the donations came out to 694 items donated, $17.50 in cash donated in the homerooms, $300.00 raised at Susquehannock for Red Shirt Staff day, and 158 students wore crazy socks on October 5.The homeroom winners ended up being homeroom 207, which had the most donated items (128), and the most students wearing crazy socks (24).

Since homeroom 207 has an enormous amount of students, the runners up of each category will also be rewarded for their efforts. Homeroom 122 came in second place for items donated with 108, and Homeroom 216 came in second place for students wearing crazy socks with 13 out of 19 wearing them.
