Best New Music of April

April is a time of change in the music industry. Winter is over, meaning that heavy, darker music can finally be replaced by the carefree music of summer. In that spirit, here are the best new tracks of April.

“BBHMM” – Rihanna

After depriving us of an album since 2012, Rihanna has decided to make her triumphant return to pop. “BBHMM” is the second single off her new album (christened R8 by Twitter) and is exactly the kind of song to welcome 2015 to the summer music season. The track is Rihanna’s affirmation that she is, in fact, the baddest musician in the game right now. She spends the song rapping over club-influenced beats, asserting “don’t act like you forgot, I call the shots, shots, shots.” You do you, RiRi.

“Teenage Talk” – St. Vincent

St. Vincent’s last effort, the excellent self-titled St. Vincent, cemented Annie Clark’s place in pop. “Teenage Talk” has the same sort of relaxed feel, but it’s much more confessional. The story could have (and probably did) happen to Annie Clark herself. The gauzy, dreamlike haze of “Teenage Talk” is an understated beauty.

“California Nights” – Best Coast

Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno’s music under Best Coast started out as hazy dream pop, but on their latest effort, California Nights, the pair’s sound has evolved. There’s more thought and emotion behind the lyrics of “California Nights” than in many previous songs. The track is both beachy and sad, which ends up being the best combination you never knew you needed.

“Yoga” – Janelle Monáe feat. Jidenna

Finally, Janelle Monáe is releasing new music under her new label, meaning we get to hear “Yoga,” the best gloriously, unabashedly feminist, hood-inspired dance song ever made. Exercise has never sounded so fun as it does on “Yoga,” which includes such motivational lines as “stretching on my cash, got my money doing yoga” and “flexing like a yogi, put it down with your hands up.” Monáe is an artist to look out for in the next few months.

“Smuckers” – Tyler, the Creator feat. Kanye West and Lil Wayne

Tyler has, on his last albums, has (for lack of a better word) pandered to his shock-hungry teenage fans. On “Smuckers,” though, he sheds his persona and holds his own with Kanye and Wayne, two of the most iconic rappers in music. Hopefully we’ll see more of this version of Tyler in the future.
