2015 is set to be the year of the franchise: the reboots (Star Wars, Terminator, Jurassic World, Mad Max), the conclusions (Mockingjay, Mission Impossible), the sequels (Avengers, Pitch Perfect, Magic Mike), and the new beginnings (Batman v Superman, Fantastic Four) all have promise, despite the epidemic of colons in the names of movies. Will 2015 conquer the lackluster ticket sales of last year? These seven long-anticipated movies are the most likely to pack theaters this year.

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens

As one of the most heavily scrutinized movies in history, The Force Awakens has a lot to live up to. An all-new cast of characters is a bold choice for the project, one that could be successful or disastrous. In the end, it doesn’t really matter if it’s good or not because it will be just as fun to praise as to eviscerate. The movie is set to be released on December 18.

Terminator: Genisys

Arnold Schwarzenegger can’t seem to stay away from the character that made him iconic (but at least a sequel to Kindergarten Cop isn’t going into production). He plays the titular Terminator, but this time there’s also other Terminators and – get this – they changed the plot of the first movie around. Maybe it won’t be entirely terrible, but – let’s not mince words – we’re all expecting it to be. Terminator is expected for July 1.

Tomorrowland

There’s too much hype surrounding this movie to entirely get what’s going on, but I’m excited anyway. George Clooney and Judy Greer are in it so there’s something to be excited about. I’m approaching this movie with hesitation, but I’m so ready for an overly dramatic alternate universe movie. Let’s do this. Tomorrowland is set for release on May 22.

Ant-Man

As Marvel’s movie universe continues to expand, Paul Rudd is taking the helm of Ant-Man (Paul Rudd needs to be in more things, so this is exciting news). Rudd should make the perfect Marvel-brand over-it superhero. It’s also fitting that the most comedic actor in the Marvel  gets the hero with the least spectacular powers in the canon. Ant-Man is planned for July 17.

Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2

Brace yourselves, everyone. As Katniss reaches the end of her journey, more and more sentimentality and loss have to be packed into Mockingjay. The defining movie franchise of the past few years is headed to an explosive, most likely emotionally scarring conclusion. Mockingjay Part 2 is set to be released on November 21.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

We are stuck in the middle of one huge superhero movie Renaissance, and Age of Ultron is set to become one of it’s crowning achievements. After years of speculation, teaser trailers, and casting rumors, Avengers will certainly be the top-grossing movie of 2015. The trailers leave things open ended, but we all can infer that at least one character will be tempted to join the dark side and someone important will “die” and then come back.  Age of Ultron is set for release on May 1.

Paper Towns

Cara Delevingne and Nat Wolff star in this adaptation of a John Green book as manic pixie dream girl and schlumpy protagonist, respectively. This summer is likely going to be the second one in a row dominated by a John Green adaptation (hopefully this one isn’t as sad, though). Paper Towns is expected on July 24.
