Boys Varsity Volleyball Jumps into New Season

Now that the winter sports season has come to a close, spring sports, like boys volleyball, officially began on March 1.

Senior Brian Sheddy has been a part of the boys volleyball team since his freshman year and has been an active member of multiple clubs where he practices between seasons. 2015 marks his final year on the team, and he has made expectations for his final experience.

“[The thing I am most looking forward to this year] is competing against the friends I made in the club season,” said Sheddy.

As most of the upcoming sport members practice for their season, Sheddy has devoted his time to playing volleyball whenever he was given the option. He’s done so by playing on a club team, as well as attending the open gyms Susquehannock has offered to the training members.

Volleyball coach Tim Bonitz has been coaching volleyball as head coach for five years,  has had many different experiences and is looking forward to this season.

“This year I am looking forward to a lot of things,” said Bonitz. “What I am most looking forward to is how the team will work hard and get progressively better as the year progresses.”

Although Bonitz is optimistic about the upcoming season, he also believes the team has their work cut out for them.

“Our league, the YAIAA, had 2 teams win states last year with Central winning the AAA State title and Northeastern winning the AA state title,” said Bonitz. “The league is extremely competitive, and deep district three is just as deep and competitive.”

In addition to the open gyms and conditioning sessions offered to players twice a week, another important aspect in the team’s preparation for the season is returning players participating in club volleyball over the winter.

The first volleyball game is Saturday, March 21 against Hempfield at Hempfield Senior High School at 8:00 a.m.
