Fall Fun

Fall is back again with the leaves changing color, the air getting cooler, the smell of warm, apple cider hanging in the air, and the pumpkins and gourds glowing as they come back into season.  Freshman Tara Weaver especially enjoys the transition to fall.  “[I like] all the different colors of fall…when the leaves change…” Weaver explained.  “I [just] don’t like one season.”  Seasonal traditions such as changing decorations, celebrating holidays, or just family get-togethers also come back as summer turns to autumn.  Teacher Mary Tombesi has a fall tradition.  “I always dip Oreos [in white chocolate] for my…niece and nephew,” Tombesi explained.  “I dip [the Oreos] in the white chocolate after it’s been melted, and then I put all kinds of fall sprinkles…or fall designs on them.”

In Southern York County, there are many opportunities for residents to participate in seasonal activities.  Brown’s Orchard in Loganville, PA allows customers to pick pumpkins and to take hayrides.  According to brownsorchards.com, the hayrides at Brown’s Orchard begin Saturday, September 22 and end on Sunday, October 28.  They run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays.  The wagon will stop for people that choose to pick a pumpkin; the cost of the hayride is $3.00 per person, and pumpkins are bought separately.  The pumpkins are priced by the pound and cost $0.40 per pound.

Swamp Fox Farms in Glen Rock, PA has pumpkin picking and hayrides, too.  According to swampfoxfarms.com, the hayrides start on Saturday, September 29 and end Sunday, October 21.  Pumpkins cost $0.49 per pound.  Swamp Fox Farms also has a mini-corn maze for customers to find their way through, which is a stop on the hayride.  Another orchard for picking pumpkins and apples is Shaw Orchards in Stewartstown, PA right on the Maryland Line. The orchards have a hayride that goes to the pumpkin patch, so people who want to pick pumpkins can.  The cost of a hayride is $6.00 with a pumpkin included, according to   shaworchards.com.

In addition to orchards, Maize Quest in New Park, Pennsylvania is celebrating the coming autumn.  Maize Quest has many mazes for adventure-seekers to navigate through.   The corn maze this year has a Mayan Mystery theme this year.  As participants go through the maze, they learn about Mayan culture as they try to solve a mystery, according to mazefunpark.com.  Furthermore, there is a bamboo maze where people navigate through bamboo to find out their fortune after visiting each of the five stations hidden in the maze.  New attractions this year at Maize Quest include: Punchin’ Pumpkins, Pyramid Puzzler, and Barnyard Board Game.  Punchin’ Pumpkins is a race involving the tagging of fake pumpkin faces to light them up to try to obtain the best score.  Pyramid Puzzler is a three-dimensional tile maze designed for one to try to get to the top of a pyramid.  Finally, the Barnyard Board Game is like a live Candyland where participants are the game pieces; however, instead of the game being candy themed, it is farm themed.   The cost of a ticket for the Corn Maize and Fun Park (including Punchin’ Pumpkins, Pyramid Puzzler and Barnyard Board game) is $10.00 for an adult ticket and $8.00 for a youth ticket.  Senior Krystal Rose especially enjoys Maize Quest.  “Maize Quest is awesome because it’s fun to get lost with people you love to hang out with,” said Rose.  Autumn is a season that brings with it a changed scenery and traditions.
