Senior Shane Silk has been playing lacrosse since he was in the second grade. His hard work and dedication to the sport has helped him find Virginia Wesleyan College where he will be playing lacrosse for the next four years.

Silk started his career with the Freeland Lacrosse Club in Frederick, Maryland.  From there he decided to spend the next 10 years playing for the Hereford Maryland youth team, playing goalie due to his talent and skill.

“I want to thank Coach Mandy Hudson,” said Silk. “My first goalie coach at Hereford Rec who taught me the fundamentals I needed to begin as a goalie.”

During his freshman year, he was one of four freshmen to be pulled up to the varsity level while the others played junior varsity.  Halfway through the season, the starting goalie at the time had an injury and was unable to play the game.  Silk stepped in as a freshman and started the game.  He helped win the Warriors that game.  From that point on, Silk was the starter.

Silk would later letter as a freshman, which was a great accomplishment at the time due to the team’s past success with a mature team.  For the next four years Silk would gain the accomplishments of 2nd team all-county and Brine National All American in his sophomore year, then go on to win 1st team all-county his junior year.  During his summers in between school years, while every other kid was going to the pool or hanging out with friends, Silk was at a lacrosse tournament with his summer team looking to get recruited by college teams.  He caught the eye of a coach at Virginia Wesleyan College, and after he saw him play coach Luke Reilly contacted him offering a position on his team.

The Fall of Silk’s senior year, he took an overnight visit to the Virginia Beach located college and fell in love with the school.  A week after that Silk verbally committed to play Division III lacrosse at Virginia Wesleyan College.

“I fell in love,” said Silk.  “The weather was amazing-as well as the facilities. A big factor was the beach as I plan to major in Marine Biology.”

Before Silk goes off to college he has to finish his senior season which he has high hopes for.

“We should do really well,” said Silk.  “The team is looking strong.  We are bringing back most of last year’s squad, and we have the talent on both sides of the field to win a county championship.”
